To Improve Your Digestion, Keep Moving!
Often, a conversation about being more active will gravitate towards discussions about weight. And it’s certainly true that exercise is an important part of staying in shape. However, there is an additional benefit to being on the move, and that’s for your digestive health.
There are many, many people that have some level of gut problems. These conditions can include Candida overgrowth, SIBO, constipation, chronic diarrhea, and many more. Many that suffer from these conditions have never given a thought as to how becoming more active could assist in their recovery.
When you give some thought to it, it really makes sense why being on the move can help.
When you move around you are stimulating the blood flow to all parts of your body, including your digestive system. The muscles get more nutrition and moving makes them work. This includes the muscles in your digestive tract.
The muscles surrounding your colon help to move the waste through your system so you can expel it via bowel movements. Exercise helps to stimulate these muscles and strengthens them.
When you are on the move, it helps your digestive system to ‘speed up’. This is why those who walk after a big meal often feel better if they have consumed too much food. A healthy, regular digestive system makes it a lot more difficult for organisms like Candida to dominate your gut flora.
The more you learn about your gut, the more convinced you’ll be that exercise is beneficial for it.
There is also some evidence that exercise can stimulate the growth of the ‘good bacteria’ in your gut, giving them a better chance of outcompeting pathogens like Candida albicans. Probiotic supplements are of course another way to do this. Ideally, a regular exercise program can help to make your probiotic supplements and probiotic foods more effective.
Just as important is using the right forms of exercise to help with your digestive health. Fortunately, there are several different forms of exercise that you can choose from.
Exercises To Improve Digestion
Here are three choices of exercises that will contribute to positive changes in your gut health. Any of these forms of exercise are beneficial in helping to strengthen the muscles in your abdomen. And if they raise your heart rate, they are also increasing your blood flow that can stimulate your digestive system to rid the body of waste.
Yoga
For those that prefer a milder form of exercise, Yoga is an excellent choice. This form of exercise revolves around different forms of stretching, bending and twisting. It is believed that some of the yoga poses that involve twisting help to increase the blood flow to the bowels. This in turn helps to strengthen the muscles of the intestines, and may help to reduce bowel inflammation and gastritis.
Tai Chi
This is another low impact form of exercise with its focus being on the nervous system. The movements carried out in Tai Chi revolve around slow and circular movements of the spine. It is thought that this has a toning and strengthening effect on the digestive organs. Many have said that Tai Chi helps with their constipation.
Swimming
Swimming is an exercise that can be performed at different levels. Many individuals with mobility ailments often end up with digestive problems, most likely because of their inability to move around as much as they should. Swimming often helps with the mobility issues, but a positive side effect is that it also helps with some of the digestive problems too.
All too often when your body is not as healthy as it should be, it’s easy to assume that you just have to put up with it. This is particularly true when talking about issues of the digestive system. By really becoming knowledgeable about how the body works, you can find that all-natural solutions like exercise might just do wonders for your digestive complaints.
